Setting up a direct debit - Your questions answered

How does a Direct Debit differ from a standing order?

Direct Debit is the most convenient and cost effective way to support our work because it cuts down on paperwork and bank charges, which means that more of your donation goes towards helping people affected by cancer.

With a Direct Debit it is Macmillan who is claiming the payments rather than the bank sending them to us. This means we can have more accurate and up to date information about who is donating and how much, meaning we don’t send you unwanted donation requests, which cuts down on mailing costs and administration.

How can I be sure that the information I have given you will be kept secure?

All information given over the internet is processed via a secure server. In the event however that you have any queries or dispute an entry on your bank account you can rely on the Direct Debit Guarantee.

How do I know if the Direct Debit has successfully been set-up?

Once you have submitted you details you will see a confirmation screen thanking you for making a regular donation. You will also receive a letter confirming your Direct Debit details which we are required to send you under the terms of the Direct Debit Guarantee.

How can I be sure that you will debit the correct amount on the date agreed?

There are a number of measures in place to ensure that all Direct Debit transactions are managed correctly.

  • You are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee which ensures that if any money is debited from your account in error, your bank guarantees to refund it.
  • We would only change the date, frequency or amount of your direct debit with your prior approval. We would also notify you at least 10 working days in advance of your account being debited.
  • You have the right to cancel any Direct Debit at any time simply by informing us or writing to your bank.

Can I select the frequency of my Direct Debit donations?

Yes, you can set the frequency as monthly, quarterly, six-monthly or annually.

When will the Direct Debit payment be debited from my bank account?

At the moment Macmillan is able to offer a debit date of the 1st, 15th or 25th of the month. This is to ensure we keep administration costs to a minimum.

Can I amend my Direct Debit?

Yes, simply telephone us on 020 7840 4900, email us at committedgiving@macmillan.org.uk, or write to us and we can amend any details for you.

Can I ask for a refund from my direct debit?

Yes you can. Under the terms of the Direct Debit guarantee a payer is entitled to an immediate refund from their bank if an error has been made either by Macmillan or the Paying bank. The Paying Bank will accept the word of the payer concerning an error made by Macmillan due to their obligations under the Direct Debit guarantee. This includes errors relating to:

  • The collection due date and frequency
  • The amounts to be paid
  • Payments made after an instruction given to cancel a Direct Debit.

The paying bank must, therefore, refund the payer immediately. However, please contact us before your bank if you suspect there has been an error.
