Chief Exec presenting cheque
Quote from Ashley Kerr - AEGON Scottish Equitable, Edinburgh.
‘Every year AEGON UK sponsor three charities nominated by the employees.
Various individuals put forward suggestions and then a full list of all the nominated charities is sent to the entire workplace asking employees to vote for the charity that they would like to benefit from the proceeds that year.
My family has a history of cancer and most recently in March 2006, we lost my Gran. Macmillan Cancer Support were absolutely wonderful during this time, providing my Gran and my family with not only medical support but also financial and emotional advice to ensure we had enough information to make my Gran's life that much easier, so I decided to nominate Macmillan.
My Gran spent a lot of time at St Johns Hospital in Livingston at the Macmillan Centre and they also helped us arrange special equipment to enable her to be at home. The support she received from this wonderful organisation and these specialist nurses was second to none and I hoped that by nominating them as a charity with AEGON for 2007, would go to show the gratitude that my family has and in a way help to give something back.
I was ecstatic when I heard that Macmillan Cancer Support had been successful. They received many votes to be one of our charities and was absolutely delighted with the amount of money raised. I felt a sense of wellbeing when Joanne Barkey, the Edinburgh fundraiser stood up to collect the cheque for £21,000 - a huge amount of money!
I now hope to continue to raise funds for Macmillan by fundraising. It’s such a worthwhile cause and I am glad to have played a part in this.’
