The money you raise will help us provide more information to people affected by cancer.

Macmillan is helping local people living with cancer by offering care, support and information through:

  • 55 nurses working in the North of Scotland both in the community and in local hospitals and cancer care centres
  • several cancer care centres including Roxburghe House which officially opened in July 2005 as a result of Macmillan's biggest ever regional appeal of £4m. Other centres include The Oaks in Elgin, the Macmillan Unit in Orkney and the Macmillan Oncology Unit at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness
  • financial advice for people affected by cancer living in the Highlands with our Macmillan CAB partnership. Since the project started approx £1 million of benefits have been accessed in the Highland area for people living with cancer
  • Macmillan grants - we help local people who are in financial difficulties as a result of their cancer diagnosis.

In Aberdeen and the north east we launched the £4 million Macmillan Roxburghe House Appeal in October 2001, which helped to fund a state of the art cancer and palliative care centre in Aberdeen. The new facility opened in August 2004, and the appeal reached a successful conclusion at Christmas time. The unit was officially opened by former Scotland internationalist Denis Law in July 2005.

In Moray we are fundraising for the Grampian Appeal. A Macmillan CAB Rights Worker is based in Elgin to provide benefits advice for residents of Moray.

We also continue to fundraise to provide much needed patient grants to ease the financial burden associated with a diagnosis as well as fund the ongoing training and development of existing postholders.

In the Highlands we are raising £1.6 million which is funding the current benefits/financial advice scheme in conjunction with Citizens Advice Bureau, additionam Macmillan health professionals including a lead GP, a consultant oncologist, a palliative care co-ordinator, a nurse consultant and a clinical nurse specialist, along with the provision of Macmillan grants, education, information and advice.

Up to December 2007 the Macmillan CAB partnership has successfully accessed over £4.5 million in returns for people affected by cancer in the Highlands.

In Skye & Lochalsh  we need to raise £300,000 to fund the refurbishment of the chemotherapy suite at the MacKinnon Memorial Hospital in Broadford which will significantly improve cancer care services locally.

In the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland appeals are ongoing to provide funds for additional Macmillan health professionals to work in these locations.
