Gower Macmarathon 2008

It was a record year for the Gower Macmarathon.

Gower Macmarathon 2008
The walkers of the Gower Macmarathon

The early start at Rhosilli did not affect numbers and 970 people registered for the 22 mile sponsored walk, with another 50 people choosing to walk from Port Eynon.  We were delighted to see the sun shining on so many happy walkers, who enjoyed the glorius Gower scenery.

The comments and feedback we have received since 13 September have been wonderful, thank you to everyone who has got in touch to tell us what they thought and how much they enjoyed the event.

Over 30 volunteers worked hard both on the day and in the weeks and months leading up to the event.  Walkers turned up in groups of friends, work colleagues, family members and those that chose to walk alone enjoyed the company of others and were swept along in the tide of enthusiasm.

Greenbeen Organics kindly donated the delicious apples and sesame seed bars to encourage walkers on their way through to Oxwich Bay and water stops were provided by friends of Macmillan.

The journey ended at the Mumbles Cricket Club, which provided the perfect venue for this year's finish.  With tables and chairs set out and bowls of cold water for tired feet, we waited for the first walkers to appear.  Certificates confirming successful completion of the walk were signed by distinguished author Iris Gower and Alun Wynn Jones, Welsh International Rugby player - the latter just 24 hours after scoring the winning try for the Ospreys in Glasgow.

Thanks are due to all the walkers, aged from 7 to 80, and to the very many helpers, managed and co-ordinated by Jenny Hill, without whom the event simply couldn't take place.

In 2007 we raised £51,000, we are confident that we will beat this amount this year!  Please help us by sending your sponsorship money by 13 December, 2008.  Over the next 12 months we are raising money to provide at least 9 new Health Professionals. All monies raised from the walk, will go towards these new sevices as well as improving and enhancing our existing ones in the area.

Here's to 2009!
